Michael Runkel has been an active member of the green industry on Long Island for the past 15 years. He currently serves as Director of Grounds and Landscaping at Hofstra University. As Director he is responsible for all maintenance tasks, storm response, and all capital landscape improvements on Hofstra’s 250-acre campus. Prior to Joining Hofstra in November of 2019, he worked for the NYS parks system as Landscape Curator at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum and Assistant Director/ Director of Horticulture at Planting Field Arboretum. Michael Graduated from Farmingdale State College in May of 2012 with a Bachelor of Technology in Horticulture Technology Management with an emphasis in Landscape Development.

    Trees are the answer when it comes to cooling the earth and cleaning the air we breathe, but all too often they are doomed from their introduction into the landscape. We will discuss common mistakes made when selecting and planting trees, selecting nursery stock, proper planting, and a selection of trees, both evergreen and deciduous for tough environments.
