Low maintenance shrub that grows in well-drained soil in partial or full shade.

 

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

Native to the South but has naturalized along the East coast. A deciduous shrub in the Sapindaceae family that turns a beautiful shade of yellow in autumn. With space to grow, the shrub is a significant size and displays panicles of white flowers in mid-summer.

 

PROBLEMS

No serious insect or disease problems.

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

Native to the Japanese Islands, Chamaecyparis pisifera, commonly known as Sawara Cypress, is a colorful needled evergreen that grows from three to five feet tall. It is very low maintenance and drought resistant.

 

PROBLEMS

No serious insect or disease problems. Susceptible to root rot and bagworms.

 

GARDEN USES

Used as a large garden specimen or as a hedge screen.  Dwarf versions are often seen in rock gardens.

CULTURE

Sargent’s Weeping Hemlock grows best in moist, well-drained, acidic soils. It is best in full sun and sheltered from drying winds.

 

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

A broad spreading form of Canadian Hemlock, with pendulous branches. Choice specimens in our collection exceed 25 feet in width.

 

PROBLEMS

Due to our hot, humid summer climate, these plants are susceptible to a number of pest problems including hemlock woolly adelgid.

As with most firs, Abies pinsapo ‘Glauca’ requires moist, well-drained soils. Plants grow best in full sun to show the blue-green foliage.

A 60 foot broadly conical specimen, with rigid 1/2 inch long blue-silver foliage.

 

PROBLEMS

Not susceptible to pests but it can be difficult to establish.
