Tree Identification Workshop

Arbor Day Celebration: It’s Not A Pine

IT’S NOT A PINE

Saturday, April 25, 2026  |  10:30 – 11:00 AM

Grades: 2-5

Length: 35 – 40 Minutes

Free

Join us on Arbor Day for a free tree-identifying presentation designed for kids in grades 2 – 5. After viewing a fun 3-minute video on the topic of identifying various coniferous evergreens, cuttings of trees will be discussed for their characteristics and their place on the Pinaceae family tree. Students will be able to examine specimens of these trees for needle size, shape, and placement, as well as the structure and placement of its cone. These will help determine which type of coniferous evergreen ut is and whether it is a Pine or NOT a Pine.

Goal: Encourage critical thinking and observation skills while learning a little about the taxonomy of the Pinaceae family.

Presented By: Carol Isles (horticulturalist) and Stephanie Fallica (retired primary school teacher)

PLEASE NOTE: Registration is required for participating students only; adults do not need to register.

About this Workshop

Learning the necessary skills to identify trees in the landscape can deepen your understanding and appreciation of the natural world. This class will include a lecture component tackling the key identification features of coniferous trees, followed by an outdoor walk where students can test their knowledge in the field using different methods to identify some major trees in the arboretum’s landscape. This is an introductory class. Participants should dress appropriately for the outdoor component. This event is rain or shine.
