Historically this half-acre path was lined with French and Persian lilacs; unfortunately, age and disease led to their severe decline and eventual removal. In 2011 the four-seasons garden was designed by public garden designers Lynden B. Miller and Ronda M. Brands and planted in 2012. Set within a stunning backdrop of mature conifers, this double “mixed” border features a diverse collection of ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs selected for their interesting shapes, textures, and colors. Plants are arranged in a series of loosely defined garden “rooms” on either side of an undulating spine of boxwood, zig-zagging through the beds on both sides of the path. As the season’s progress, the increasingly exuberant plantings spill over the hedge, highlighting “the value and importance of informal planting” that is part of the Arboretum’s mission. This ever-changing display provides beauty and interest all year through.
