CULTURE

Grows in full sun to part shade.  It likes rich, organic, medium to wet soil.  Younger stems have the best yellow color. Older stems should be pruned out in early spring.

 

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

‘Silver and Gold’ is a compact shrub that grows 5 to 6 feet tall and has a spreading habit. The foliage has cream margins, its bright yellow stems are an outstanding ornamental feature in winter. This species is native to much of North America, usually found growing in wet swampy areas.

 

PROBLEMS

Leaf and twig blights, scale, leave miners, and bagworm.

 

GARDEN USES

Shrub borders, property line screens. Can help combat soil erosion in wet locations along streams and ponds.
