NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

Agastache ‘Black Adder’ is also known as Giant Hyssop or Hummingbird mint. It is an upright, clump-forming perennial that grows 2-3 feet tall. Long blooming (June – September) tubular red-violet flowers that attract bees, hummingbird, and butterflies. It is a member of the mint family and has aromatic, licorice-scented foliage.  Native to the southwestern United States and Mexico.

 

PROBLEMS

No serious insect or disease problems. It is deer and rabbit resistant.

 

GARDEN USES

Sunny borders, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens and as a cut flower.

CULTURE

Grows in full sun to part shade in rich, moist, sandy soil with good drainage. It is adaptable to poor soil and can tolerate some drought after established.

 

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

The White Fir, also known as the Colorado Fir, is medium in size, slow growing, evergreen with soft blueish or silver-gray needles.  Native to the western United States, it can grow 40 to 70 feet tall and spread 20 to 30 feet in the residential landscape.

 

PROBLEMS

No serious insect or disease problems but can be affected by balsam woolly adelgid, bark beetles, spruce budworms, aphids, bagworm, scale, spider mites, root rot, needle rust, and twig blight.

 

GARDEN USES

The White Fir is a large ornamental tree that has winter interest. It is used as a specimen in landscapes.

HISTORY

Because the wood lacks a distinctive odor, white firs were once used for tubs in which butter was stored.

CULTURE

Grows in full sun to part shade.  It likes rich, organic, medium to wet soil.  Younger stems have the best yellow color. Older stems should be pruned out in early spring.

 

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

‘Silver and Gold’ is a compact shrub that grows 5 to 6 feet tall and has a spreading habit. The foliage has cream margins, its bright yellow stems are an outstanding ornamental feature in winter. This species is native to much of North America, usually found growing in wet swampy areas.

 

PROBLEMS

Leaf and twig blights, scale, leave miners, and bagworm.

 

GARDEN USES

Shrub borders, property line screens. Can help combat soil erosion in wet locations along streams and ponds.

Grows in full sun to part shade in medium, well-drained soil.  It does not transplant well and should be planted when young and left undisturbed.

 

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

Deciduous single or multi-trunked understory tree. Grows 20 to 30 feet tall. Flowers bloom in early spring (March to April) on bare branches before leaves emerge. Flowers are pea-like, rose-purple in color. It is native to eastern and central North America, ‘Forest Pansy’ is a purple-leaved cultivar.

 

PROBLEMS

Pests include treehoppers, leafhoppers, scale, and caterpillars. Canker can be a disease problem as well.

 

GARDEN USES

Excellent small tree for lawns, gardens, and naturalized areas planted as a specimen or in groups. Use as a street tree.

 

HISTORY

Cercis canadensis is the state tree of Oklahoma.

Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ also known as Falling Stars is native to Africa. This is a clump-forming bulb with tubular scarlet red flowers that attract hummingbirds and blooms from June to August.

 

PROBLEMS

Spider mites can cause damage to foliage.

 

GARDEN USES

Provides color and contrast to perennial gardens.  Can be planted in containers and makes a good cut flower.
