CULTURE

Schizachyrium scoparium grows well in dry to medium moist well-drained soil in full sun. This ornamental grass is very tolerant of poor soils and high heat and humidity.

 

NOTEWORTHY CHARACTERISTICS

Native to prairies and open fields, Schizachyrium scoparium, commonly known as little bluestem, matures at 2 to 4′ long linear green leaves.  The base of the plant has a tinge of blue at the base. Little bluestem is known for its amazing bronze-orange fall foliage color and in the winter, they have attractive fluffy silvery-white seed heads.

 

PROBLEMS

No serious insect or disease problems.

 

GARDEN USES

Used as an ornamental grass border especially for sun-baked areas.
